Congratulations WLHS – 5th Best High School in Iowa

West Liberty High School was ranked 5th Best in Iowa for a second year in a row by U.S. News. The methodology used by U.S. News to determine the awards is a four-step process:

  1. Students perform better than expected in their state.
    • U.S. News looked at reading and math results for students on each state’s proficiency tests and then factored in the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, who tend to score lower.
  2. Disadvantaged students perform better than state average.
    • U.S. News compared each school’s math and reading proficiency rates for disadvantaged students – black, Hispanic and low-income – with the statewide results for these student groups and then selected schools that were performing better than their state averages
  3. Student graduation rates meet or exceed a national standard.
  4. Students are prepared for college-level coursework.
    • U.S. News calculated a College Readiness Index, which is based on the school’s AP participation rate and how well the students did on those tests.

Many thanks to all staff of the West Liberty Community School District for all they have done, and for all they do, to support our students and contribute to their success.  Congratulations to the students who work hard, and to their parents, without whom they could not achieve such success.  See the state rankings at the following link:

Join Our Text Messaging Service-Nuevo Servicio de Mensajería

Join Our Text Messaging Service

Our district has a text messaging service that enables us to transmit instant messages to subscribers.  This free service by RainedOut fills an important niche in our collection of communication tools:  the school district website; the automated calling system; e-mail messages; TV & radio messages; Friday Folders, student announcements, and mailings.

One of the advantages of this tool is that it allows us to reach anyone who chooses to join the network, including relatives, baby sitters, neighbors, community organizations, and others whose contact information is not in our student information system.  It also affords us a way to prepare and send messages that will reach recipients in a timely manner, whether or not there might be a power failure in the school district or at the location of any of the recipients.

To join our new text message program, open a new text message on your cell phone, enter “84483” for the phone number, then, in the message area, enter the message “WLComets.”

We will use our text messaging service to communicate school delays and cancellations, as well as other important notices and reminders.  We will continue to announce school delays and cancellations through our other channels as well:  automated calls to our families & staff; TV & radio; our district website; and e-mail.
