Student Activity Information Form – deadline is the third Wednesday in January – to the high school office or to Ms. Weiss
The National Honor Society (N.H.S.) is our nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. It is not just an honor roll, N.H.S. serves to honor students who demonstrate excellence in the following areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginnings in 1921.
After first trimester grades have been tabulated and published, sophomore, junior, and senior students who have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average will be notified via school email that they have become eligible to fill out an information form and write an essay, which shows that in addition to the scholarship, the pillars of service, leadership, and character have also been met.
This form is reviewed by a five-member faculty council (the advisers act as facilitators, but are not the decision-makers), plus input is requested from the entire faculty as to whether or not they feel the student has met the standards to become an NHS member. At that point, a formal invitation is offered and an induction ceremony is held, usually in March.
Questions about the process can be submitted to the co-advisors: Ms. Lawson slawson@wl.k12.ia.us and Mrs. Larson mlarson@wl.k12.ia.us
Once the student becomes a member, a national account membership needs to be created by the student by going to: https://www.nhs.us/studentaccount/
SCHOLARSHIP: The West Liberty McVay NHS Chapter requires a minimum cumulative 3.5 grade point average during four consecutive trimesters.
This 3.5 GPA must be maintained by each NHS member.
SERVICE: Demonstrate service to school and community.
Service projectsare integral to membership.
LEADERSHIP: Be a proven leader both in and out of the classroom.
Good Leaders have integrity, empathy, ability to delegate, and courage to do what is right.
CHARACTER: Demonstrate impeccable character at all times.
The six pillars of character are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship “T.R.R.F.C.C.” (terrific).
