West Liberty High School is excited to welcome Chayse Schultz as our new head girls wrestling coach (pending School Board approval). Coach Schultz has been an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa City High School for five years, along with coaching football and baseball. Recently, Coach Schultz, who teaches 8th-grade literacy at West Liberty Middle School, was hired as an assistant football coach at West Liberty.
“The tradition and excellence of West Liberty wrestling speaks for itself, and I could not be more excited to lead this program and help our girls take it to the next level,” Schultz said. “I have seen and felt the support of the West Liberty community in my time here – this is a special place! I am looking forward to the 2024-2025 season and cannot wait to get started.”
Coach Schultz takes over a Comet wrestling program that qualified five individuals at last year’s Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state meet. Returning from those five qualifiers are state runner-up at 115 pounds Silvia Garcia-Vasquez, and Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez who finished 8th at 235 pounds.
“We are excited to have Coach Schultz take over our girls wrestling program,” said Adam Loria, Activities Director at West Liberty Schools. “His energy and passion for helping student-athletes strive for excellence is second to none. We look forward to our girls wrestling program rising to a championship level under Coach Schultz’s leadership.”
